“My,” the Señora murmured as she bent over my belly. Her magical goop was slathered across it, making my skin turn translucent and allowing her to see the babies beneath it. Their bodies glowed like iridescent opals brought to life. Tiny hands and feet, grasping at each other in a mishmash of limbs. “They’ve grown so much in only a week.”

I didn’t comment, instead staring up at the ceiling. I focused on the cool table beneath me as a way of grounding myself. While needed, these appointments were a little too invasive for my comfort. I hadn’t been to a doctor since I was a child. I wasn’t touchy-feely in general, not even with my family growing up. My parents always thought I was emotionally damaged from watching my world change. I saw the president murdered on TV and then proceeded to live through the Magic Wars. They were probably right, of course. Logically I knew it was impossible to live through what I had without suffering trauma, but I’d lived it so long that it didn’t register that way. Instead, it simply was. Any lovers I’d taken before Ronan were closer to fuck buddies. I never slept over. I never stayed.

To have someone touching me, using magic on me, looking inside me—it was a step that I didn’t think I’d ever be truly all right with.

“How is Mist’s training coming along?” I asked, pretending that she wasn’t hovering over me and that my stomach wasn’t lit up like a disco ball.

“It’s coming.”

I frowned, waiting for her to continue. She didn’t. “Can you elaborate?”

“She’s a gifted seer, able to connect with both short- and long-sight, but she’s afraid of what she’ll see. Her fear makes her power difficult to control. She’s working on it.” That was both more and less than what I’d hoped for.

“And you still think you can help her?” I asked, hedging carefully.

“I’m still working with her, aren’t I?” It wasn’t exactly an answer, though she seemed to think so. “I do not waste my time. If I didn’t think I could do it, I would have said so. I can—but it will take time. Months. Years. Who knows? But it won’t be instant.”

I nodded slowly, counting the cracks in her ceiling. “And the death magic?” I asked. “You think you can help that too?”

“No,” she said. “She needs to heal to be able to get a hold on that, and only time will do it.”

I paused in my counting. Her answer was candid. Not what I wanted to hear necessarily, but it was the truth. In the same way I’d had to work through the worst of my issues to be able to harness my magic, so would Mist. I didn’t want that for her, but I also did. I wanted her to heal, but I needed her to have control over her magic. Until she did, she was a danger to herself and others. But after everything she’d lived through . . . time would be the only thing that could help.
